Teorias da Inspiração

Inspiration. July 1992 – at the Virgínia Theater in Torres Novas, the show marking the end of the school year at the dance school I had just entered was being performed. Sitting in the audience, aged six, I couldn’t have imagined how much that piece would fill the lungs of my choreographic work.
Exhale. When I looked for the VHS tape on which I had recorded it, I realized that it had disappeared. Without the video record, it opened up space for an exercise in reminiscence and speculation.
Conspiracy. In a recent conversation with dance teacher Helena Azevedo, I realized that Mulher Traço Variações had been created with the intention of pleasing the audience, who had left the hall unsatisfied during the students’ performance the previous year. To my surprise, the 1992 show-inspiration now appeared to me, not as an avant-garde project, but rather as a gesture of approximation, forcing me to question my own mythology.

In a labyrinth of mirrors and murmurs, Teorias da Inspiração sows a conspiratorial fiction about these shows without a trace, now reactivated by memory and imagination.
